Akustische Fusionen

(ME: Magotyp-Eigenschaft):

- (ME1): Die 2. Eigenresonanz der Luftsäule liegt genau zwischen 1. und 2. Oberton (bzw. 2. und 3. Harmonischen des Grundtones) und die 3. Eigenresonanz der Luftsäule liegt genau zwischen 2. und 3. Oberton (bzw.

Akustische Fusion: Harmonic Wobbel - Mago-Typ

Frank Geipel / 20.01.2018

Acoustic Fusions

In the case of requests for the configuration of individually desired instruments, characteristics or effects which are physically excluded and thus cannot be realized are often desired.

This table summarizes the coupling capability of characteristics:

In principle, the statement applies:

The more effects to be coupled in parallel in an instrument, the greater the playability and sound flexibility of the instrument and the less is the typical expression of each individual effect.

Another topic is the physical feasibility of certain overblown notes (toots) interval sequences in playable instruments. This topic is not so easy to answer, as accurate statements usually require some Directed Evolution runs.

Simple example:
The first overblow should be minimally 1.25 times the fundamental frequency, and for instruments with good playability this should be limited to a maximum of 3 times the fundamental frequency.

Yidaki – Mago – Yidago

Frank Geipel 24.07.2011

Especially for those interested in traditional playing techniques, the acoustic and playing characteristics of an instrument are an important prerequisite for the optimal implementation of these techniques. As a rule, every play technique requires a suitable instrument. The North-East Arnhemland technique (NEAL) requires Yidaki-type instruments, the West-Arnhemland technique (WAL) requires Mago-type instruments.

Yidaki-type instruments are characterized by the following characteristics
(YC: Yidaki-.typ characteristic):

- (YC1): The first overblown note is in the range of one octave to one octave and 3/2 notes above the drone note and is easy to play.
- (YC2): The mean and higher harmonic overtones (4th-7th harmonic overtone resp 5 - 8 fold of the drone frequency) lie symmetrically balanced to the intrinsic resonances of the air column in this region. This characteristic gives good Yidaki’s the necessary elasticity when playing and is prerequisite for the often desired harmonic wobbles.
- (YC3): The drone note is between C and F# (usually between E and F#).
- The integral shape of this instrument type is more conical.

Mago-type instruments are characterized by the following characteristics
(MC: Mago-type characteristic):

- (MC1): The second intrinsic resonance of the air column lies relative exactly between the first and second harmonic overtones (resp 2 and 3 fold of the drone frequency) and the third intrinsic resonance of the air column also lies relative precisely between the 2nd and 3rd harmonic overtone (resp 3 and 4 fold of the drone frequency). This feature enhances the Mago typical heterodynes of the drone and the voice. These "rug" notes are also perceived as an intense feedback of the instrument into the vocal tract of the player.
- (MC2): The higher harmonic overtones (6th - 8th overtone resp 7 - 9 fold of the drone frequency) are amplified by intrinsic resonances of the air column and are perceptible as singing tones.
- (MC3): The drone note is between Dis and G# (usually between F and G).
- The integral shape of this instrument type is more cylindrical.

Possibilities of acoustic fusion from Yidaki- and Mago- characteristics:

With help of the "directed evolution tools", internal shape configurations were sought, which should to merge various combinations of desired acoustic characteristics of the yidaki- and mago- type in one instrument. It was shown (as expected) that the combination of all properties is not physically possible. Following are two examples from the selection of physically possible interior shape configurations:

Yidago type (M):
  • First overblown note one octave and 3/2 tones above the drone (YC1); Corresponds to the position of the second intrinsic resonance of the air column between 1st and 2nd harmonic overtone (resp 2 and 3 fold of the drone frequency) (MC1)
  • Position of the 3rd intrinsic resonance of the air column exactly between 2nd and 3rd harmonic overtone (resp 3 and 4 fold of the drone frequency) (MC1)
  • The 6th harmonic overtone resp the 7 fold of the drone frequency is amplified by an intrinsic resonance of the air column and can be perceived as singing tone (MC2).
  •  The 7th and 8th harmonic overtones resp the 8 and 9 fold of the drone frequency are symmetrically balanced to the intrinsic resonances of the air column in this region. (YC2)
  • The drone is between D# and E (built in D#)
  • This type of instrument (M) is dominated by the Mago characteristics.

Here the spontaneous feedback from Manfred after his first playing experiences:

... "... have played about 6 pieces and did not know what, because the instrument offers sooo much. It can be played smoothly is extremely elastic. Just wonderful. Whether I play it gently or hard it is just there. It is possible that the mixture of Yidaki and Mago opens up a new world. In any case, it offers extremely much to discover and that takes time. It takes discipline "just Mago Styles" or "just Yidaki Styles" to play because it invites you to go beyond ....... "...

Yidago type (Y):

  • First overblown note one octave and 3/2 tones above the drone (YC1); Corresponds to the position of the second intrinsic resonance of the air column between 1st and 2nd harmonic overtone (resp 2 and 3 fold of the drone frequency) (MC1)
  • Position of the 3rd intrinsic resonance of the air column exactly between 2nd and 3rd harmonic overtone (resp 3 and 4 fold of the drone frequency) (MC1)
  • The 5th and 6th harmonic overtones resp the 6 and 7 fold of the drone frequency are symmetrically balanced to the intrinsic resonances of the air column in this region. (YC2)
  • The 9th harmonic overtone resp the 10 fold of the drone frequency is amplified by an intrinsic resonance of the air column and can be perceived as singing tone (MC2).
  • The drone is between D# and E (built in D#).
  • This type of instrument (Y) is dominated by the Yidaki characteristics.

This instrument is characterized by a wonderful rolling elasticity when playing. With a right voice input the ringing overtones (harmonic wobbles) can be combined with the roughness of a Mago type. Subjectively, this instrument invites more to NEAL playing techniques since these acoustic properties are more pronounced.

Conclusion:
By combining the physically possible acoustic properties of Mago- and Yidaki- type characteristics, "extreme" versatile instruments are created, inviting you to explore and discover advanced technical possibilities.

A fusion of all typical acoustic properties of Mago- and Yidaki- type instruments is not physically possible. This is why it is always recommended for purists of special playing styles to have an acoustically optimized instrument for the respective preferred playing style.

Due to the first hands-on experience with such types of instruments, we will continue the search for more interesting Y-M combinations.

Small instrument with great potential
Frank Geipel 20.10.2016

In the course of the theoretical and experimental search for further possibilities of coupling effects in an instrument, I discovered this video.

Here a random didgeridoo of glass emerged, in which surprisingly Mago-type heterodyne frequency effects from the drone and the voice are coupled with a clearly perceptible harmonic wobble.

After a first acoustic analysis using FFT tools, I recognized the typical resonance pattern that caused these effects and developed them further.

For the first prototype with the drone F

a small robinia trunk with a length of only 113 cm was sufficient.

After finishing and first playing this small inconspicuous instrument, I was of his potential
pleasantly surprised.

Here's a first home test on a staircase:

... and here a current sound sample from Ansgar to the Australia weekend in Eisenbach 2017.

In 2018 I built this interesting instrument in the pitch D# from ash.
Here is a sound example from Patrick at the Australia weekend in Eisenbach 2019.
The comparability of the sound characteristics with the original glass didgeridoo is amazing.

Acoustic Fusion: Harmonic Wobble - Mago-Typ

Frank Geipel / 20.01.2018

Fascinated by the small instrument with great potential and the Harmonic Wobble effect, the desire arose to find a form for a Mago-type instrument, which also has a clear perceptible harmonic wobble effect and the associated elasticity.

Based on the experience with acoustic fusions, I set the Directed Evolution tools to this goal. From the found amount of playable alternative forms I decided based on my playing experiences for the best playable form according to my preferences and transformed these to the fundamental tone E.

For this instrument I needed a wooden blank of at least 131 cm in length. Coincidentally, I still had the top piece of the Robinia tree trunk from which I built my personal instrument (Barugula Yunupingu) in October 210, a Yidaki-type octave instrument with harmonic wobble effects (News 2017) ... and that should be enough. As a construction method, the sandwich method was used again.

The result was a Mago-type instrument, which amplifies the typical heterodyne frequencies of fundamental tone and voice through the correct position of the intrinsic resonances and in addition has a stimulable, clearly perceptible harmonic wobble pattern between the 6th and 7th harmonic of the fundamental tone (5th and 6th overtones).

And here a playing test of Ansgar during the Australien weekend in Eisenbach (Black Forest Germany)

I provided this form to Ansgar to build a GFK instrument.
