Von der CADSD-Didge(R)Evolution Projektierung zur CNC-Fertigung –

Erster CADSD/CNC Didgeridoo- Prototyp…

From CADSD-Didge(R)Evolution to CNC-carving – First CADSD to CNC Didgeridoo Prototype…

About the didge:
This didge (called “The Slugger” because the CNC prototype is made of Ash and looks like the Louisville Slugger baseball bat) was designed for contemporary percussive/polyphonic playing styles, and its power lives up to its name!ype…

The interesting experiment of this design was to maximize the playability of three special false tones/pseudo toots, i.e., notes which do not have an impedance peak at their fundamental but which have a high degree of “harmonicity” (the grey peaks on the graph).

Harmonicity means that there are impedance peaks for one or more of the harmonics of a given frequency. For instance, look at the “A” note written in grey on the graph. Although there is no black impedance peak at that frequency, notice that there is an impedance peak (as indicated by a black peak) at the “A” note one octave above the original “A”. The first harmonic in the harmonic series is one octave, so that gives the grey “A” some harmonicity. Also notice there is another “A” with an impedance peak the next octave up—this is the third harmonic of the grey “A” false note (“false” because even though it has no black impedance peak at its fundamental frequency, with extra lip control it can be made to sound convincingly like an actual tone). Finally, the “C#” with high backpressure is also a harmonic of the false “A”. The more harmonics there are with backpressure, the higher the grey summation peaks. (Notice that the first very pronounced grey peak is below the drone/fundamental and is therefore a pseudo-drone/drop drone.)

Building the didge on a computer-controlled router table
The first step was to take the dimensions arrived at through the CADSD directed evolution process and enter them into the 3D modeling software to be used by the CNC router.
Here is a screen shot from the 3D modeling and toolpathing software (SolidWorks and Aspire)

After the didge-building was completed, we performed a spectral analysis of the new instrument.
To see the fundamental and its harmonics, you play the drone as usual; all harmonics sound simultaneously. But, interestingly, to see the intrinsic resonances, you slap the palm of your hand on the mouthpiece and hold; all the intrinsic resonances sound simultaneously. We overlaid the two spectra into one image so that they can be more easily compared. The result matches the prediction. It plays nicely, with plenty of backpressure on the drone and five toots, and, like a hidden prize, three very resonant and convincing “false tones” or “pseudo toots” for the player who can find their sweet spots with extra lip control.

The first CNC build experiment was a success, but more builds are necessary to hone the process. In future builds, we will be exploring more efficient CNC carving techniques to minimize machine time and maximize precision.
